What are you addicted to?
Addiction can make our lives dull washes of gray, like slate waves on an endless shore as the rain drains the clouds
There are many definitions of addiction
Your proposed definition: Addiction is a behavior pattern/thought process in which we compulsively engage, and which hinders our transformation into our Best Self
We’re not addicted to “social media”, but rather to “spending time on social media”
We’re not addicted to “anger”, but rather to “feeling angry”
The point being: we can’t change the nature of social media, or anger…but we can change how we spend our time/feel
When we shift our language from: “I’m addicted to this-or-that”
To, “I’m addicted to doing/feeling this-or-that”
We give ourselves power to transform from being addicted, to being in recovery
There are many different definitions of recovery
Your proposed definition…
Recovery is taking action on our belief: our goal is not to end our addiction, but rather to transform into our Best Self
Just because we’re done with our addiction? Doesn’t mean our addiction is done with us
Addiction is deeply connected to our Self
(our behavior patterns/thought processes ensure our survival…if not our happiness)
Thus our recovery must focus on our Self
It can seem like a struggle!
Yet consider the butterfly, fighting to free herself from her cocoon
Her struggle is mighty…heartbreakingly so…
Yet her struggle gives her wings—shocking in the beauty of their vibrant color—the strength to fly
Your struggle to recover from what you’re addicted to, is your transformation into your Best Self
